No,Second Start is not a rescue. We are an enhanced listing service for racehorse trainers and owners wanting to find their retiring racehorses a new home and a new career. The horses stay in the possession of their owner/trainer while we actively advertise the horse and screen potential buyers. Second Start charges no commission or fees to racehorse trainers/owner. There is also no fee for the buyer.
Second Start receives all information about the horse from the owner or trainer. Second Start Thoroughbreds DOES NOT OFFER ANY GUARANTEE ON THE PHYSICAL CONDITION OR BEHAVIOR OF ANY OF THESE HORSES AT ANY TIME. We highly recommend a pre-purchase exam! Claims and descriptions made by the listing owner/trainer have not been verified by Second Start.
Second Start is a free service for both the seller and the buyer. We are a not for profit business and a donation is always appreciated. Every penny will go back into Second Start and ensuring we continue to find great homes for retiring racehorses.
It is important for Second Start to ascertain how suitable the horse you are interested in will be for your needs. We require the paperwork to be completed prior to setting up any appointments to view the horses.
Email or phone Second Start (519) 688-0722 and we will work with the trainer and you to find a suitable day and time to meet a listed horse.
No, you can not ride the horse at the track. Please ask the handler to walk and trot the horse out for you, in order to get an idea of movement.
If the horse is on a private farm, riding the horse will be at the discretion of the owner. Proper riding attire is highly recommended.
Cash is preferred.
You are responsible for providing trailering for your new horse. Race trainers will not have the time to deliver your horse for you. Second Start can recommend some local haulers to assist you with bringing your new horse home.
Some trainers will give the papers with the bill of sale, some will not. Second Start asks for a least a photocopy to accompany the horse to their new owner. You do not need JC papers to apply for a passport or to get Sport Horse approval.
